We are looking for a Senior Urban Planner, who is looking to apply their experience and expertise to a new and challenging environment. This is a key role in strengthening our region and connecting our community as we move forward in a new legislative environment of strategic and natural and built environment planning

The Role

As a Senior Urban Planner, you’ll be joining the Transport and Urban Planning team, who are passionate about working together to shape our community. You will be part of team where you will lead the development, implementation and review of Regional Council policies and plans across the Bay of Plenty region, which uniquely has Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 urban environments.

The role is varied and interesting and in any one day you will;
  • Manage complex plan changes through community and political decision-making processes, engaging with stakeholders, community and customers as we plan for the future.
  • Provide strategic planning and analytical support as well as policy and specialist technical advice including the provision of reports and recommendations on regional urban planning issues, such as SmartGrowth
  • Provide leadership and direction to projects including preparation and oversight of budgets
  • Providing leadership and guidance in strategic, urban and built-environment planning as Toi Moana adapts to new legislative frameworks
  • Research local, national and international trends and issues in Planning practice
  • Maintain close working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, communities and customers, particularly with our city and district councils

About you

We are looking for a team player who is passionate about using their skills to make a difference. The qualifications and key skills we look for are:
  • Technical specialist urban planning
  • Project management experience including leading multi-disciplinary projects
  • Excellent analytical and research skills, including qualitative and quantitative analysis on issues contributing to policy development
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to connect and engage with stakeholders, at all levels, including senior leaders, principal advisors, elected members and other key stakeholders, both internal and external
  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree and strong post-qualification experience in planning practice or urban economics discipline is desirable
  • A valid driver’s licence

We have an overview function for urban development and transport under our Regional Policy Statement. A major focus of our work involves looking after the environment. We manage the effects of people’s use of freshwater, land, air and coastal water. However, we also have a broader responsibility with others for the economic, social and cultural well-being of the regional community.
